  Election Women

Elections are major tools for the measurement of contesting candidates at National and Provincial level. It is the best opportunity for the citizen of the country to participate in the decision making process of local, provincial and national level issues.  Elections are the starting point of a healthy democratic system, but without an informed electorate the potential for democratic transformation is limited. In order to participate effectively in elections citizens especially the rural women need information. In many parts of Sindh women cannot readily access such information due to low level of literacy, cultural and social restrictions on their movement and inadequate availability of substantive information. To ensure women know their voting rights and understand the voting process and enable women to access relevant information Sindh Graduates Association (SGA) operated a project titled “Participation of women in election process and importance of vote” in 20 Union Councils of three districts viz.  Larkana, Shahdadkot Qambar and Shikarpur before elections. The activity was funded by Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Since the whole program was focused on encouragement and empowerment of women for participating in Electoral Process, therefore, the objectives were set as follows:

  • To mobilize and motivate women participation
  • To raise awareness in women for Electoral Process
  • To Conduct Seminars/Workshops and generate support in favour of participation of women in Electoral Process at Grass root level.
  • To develop clear understanding in women for choosing right and potential candidate for resolving their needs and demands.
  • To sensitize the rural women regarding important of the vote.
  • Pre-Preparation of the vote casting.
  • To involve different local stake holders i.e. Religious, Social, Women Councilors etc to encourage women participation in Election.
  • To create motive groups with in society to support women participation.
  • To train women How to Caste Vote?

The application of the objectives within the community was carried out through conducting training workshops with the rural women. Through trainings SGA attempted to empower women by helping them understand the basic concepts related to their participation in electoral process. Training workshops were managed to align union council Nazims, Naib Nazims, union council members particularly women. SGA has not restricted itself merely to individuals holding position of powers but engaged SGA volunteers, local SGA office bearers and SGA Larkana social mobilization units, local women and youth at the community level towards greater participation in the training.

The program was focused on 20 Union Councils of three Districts viz. Larkana, Shahdadkot Qamber and Shikarpur. The 20 workshops/seminars each comprising of 100 women participants were arranged in such way to cover all the 6 (six) National Assembly and 12 Provincial Assembly constituencies of the three districts. The areas selected for this purpose were Rural and Semi Urban where the women are mostly not allowed or restricted to cast their vote in the General Elections. The venues were selected in a point of view that the program may focus and attract surrounding maximum villages and dissemination of the program to other surrounding villages may be easy and possible. It was particularly emphasized that the participation of women must be of cluster of different castes, tribes, Mohella and villages of selected UCs so that the information may be disseminated to all.
